YET Expedition Leaders Planning Course 2008
| | | This annual course is open to anyone who is intending, hoping, or even just interested in leading youth expeditions, either in the UK or abroad. | Programme: The course will offer instruction in expedition planning, in selecting members and leaders, in choosing equipment, in organising food requirements, in the pre-expedition training of the expedition members, in the management of a leader team in the field, in budgeting, in insurance and fundraising, in risk assessment, in all aspects of safety procedures, in project work, and in the essential environmental obligations of a wild country expedition. Course participants will be given the opportunity to discuss their own expedition plans with the Course Staff, who are all experienced expeditioners well-known to YET. Accommodation is in multi-bedded rooms.
Cost: £88 (10% discount available to YET members) to include: full board from coffee on Saturday to tea on Sunday, all course materials, all seminars and lectures. Non-residential course attendees are welcome, at a cost of £75, which covers everything above except accommodation and Sunday breakfast. Overnight accommodation for Friday evening can be arranged for resident course members for a small extra fee. Land Rover Driver Training
22-23 September 2008 17-18 November 2008 All at Eastnor Castle, Hereford. During this hands-on physical course, delegates will be guided and trained not only in how to drive Land Rover Defender vehicles but will also be expected to operate winch cables, test the ground ahead and even to push through wet, muddy ground. Cost £150 incl. VAT LEA Overseas Expeditions & Fieldwork Thursday 19th June 2008 - at the RGS (IBG), London A one day course for teachers and youth leaders. Working with the LEA Outdoor Education Advisors Panel, the RGS-IBG has developed this course for teachers planning to lead overseas expeditions and fieldwork, possibly using a contracted expeditions company or other third party provider. The course is also useful for schools that might want to organise an expedition themselves, or for EVCs supporting their colleagues in this role. Cost: £111.63 incl. VAT, lunch and course notes. 17-18 June 2008 14-15 October 2008 2-3 December 2008 All held at the RGS (IBG), London This course will be particularly relevant to educational visit coordinators, teachers, youth leaders, and university lecturers who are responsible for off-site visits within their organisation (examples of which include, geography fieldwork, adventurous outdoor activities and cultural visits). The 15-hour course concentrates on the need to plan, manage and evaluate any off-site visit in any context. Cost: £211.50 incl. VAT, lunch and course notes. Accommodation not included. Google Earth Training Tuesday 21st October 2008 at the RGS (IBG), London This practical workshop will show teachers and expedition organizations how to create virtual fieldwork using Google Earth as a template. It will involve hands-on experience with digital cameras and GPS units creating mini-fieldwork projects in Hyde Park. Participants will then be shown how to this data can be transformed into a virtual journey using Google Earth.

Advanced Google Earth Training Course Wednesday 22nd October 2008 held at the RGS (IBG), London A hands-on workshop that demonstrates how GPS and digital cameras can be used to capture geo-referenced data on a field trip and used to create classroom resources using Google Earth. Cost: £141 incl. VAT. This course is free to Chartered Geographers (Teachers). BS 8848 Compliance Workshops Friday 13th June 2008 at the RGS (IBG), London A new British Standard, BS 8848: "Specification for adventurous activities, expeditions, visits and fieldwork outside the UK" has recently been published. It specifies operational requirements for those responsible for organising overseas activities and student placements abroad. All who understand BS 8848 will be better informed about the risks and safety management procedures that good practice indicates should be in place before fieldwork begins. Cost: £176.25 incl. VAT for charities or organisations that send less than 100 members overseas. £111.63 for HEI\'s. For all other youth organisations the cost is £293.75 incl. VAT. Wilderness Medical Training Next course will be held in March 2009 at the RGS (IBG), London Organised in association with Wilderness Medical Training (WMT). This two-day course starts where conventional first aid stops. it is designed for small expedition groups operating without professional medical support in remote areas outside the UK. Cost: Student rate: £188 incl. VAT. Standard price: £265 incl. VAT Explore: the annual expedition and fieldwork planning seminar Friday 21st November (opening lecture), Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd November 2008 at the RGS (IBG), London Explore is THE place to find inspiration, contacts and practical advice for successful expeditions or research projects. Lectures, workshops and exhibits cover planning projects in a variety of environments and research disciplines. Cost: Rates vary depending on circumstances and group size. Fieldskills
Environment Specific Courses - Tropical Forest, Desert, Savannah and Mountain Courses suitable for Leaders or outdoor instructors with plans or aspirations to lead expeditions in these environments, Leaders with past tropical experience who want to benchmark current best practice, Teachers going on expeditions who want to feel informed and confident in these environments and researchers or adventure travellers planning to travel to these areas. The courses cover health and safety; the practical essentials to ensure an enjoyable and safe expedition; how to live and lead in these areas: the finer points of living and camping together with some considerations on planning trips and leading groups. Courses are run in the Oxford area and can also be run in-house for your group if needed. Safety Planning and Leadership These courses are suitable for anyone wanting to plan their own fieldwork or expedition. Also for any team member who wants a better understanding of the practical and safety implications of fieldwork, particularly in remote, overseas locations. Courses focus on risk assessment and crisis management planning and emphasise real scenarios and applying planning to changing situations. Kit provision, soft skills and leadership are also covered. Courses are run in the Oxford area, and are also popular as bespoke options for universities (2-hour seminars to 2-day courses). British Mountaineering Council (BMC)
Jonathan Conville Memorial Trust Alpine Courses June, July and August 2008 Chamonix Valley, France Subsidised courses for climbers and mountaineers who have experience of British mountaineering and who want to climb in the Alps. Ratio of 1 Guide: 3 participants, three days in duration. They give a practical introduction to glacier travel, crevasse rescue, avalanche assessment and use of equipment. Application forms are available from the BMC from early March each year, selections are made early in May. The deadline for application is usually end Apr / early May. Jonathan Conville Memorial Trust Scottish Winter Mountaineering Courses December, January, February 2008 Cairngorms These subsidised courses bridge the gap between summer climbing/walking and winter mountaineering. The ratio is 1 instructor to 6 participants, two days in duration. The courses cover use of ice axe and crampons, navigation and avalanche assessment. Applications to the BMC by mid- November each year (see application form for deadline date). Application forms available from the BMC usually at the end September/early October. Jonathan Conville Memorial Trust Mountain Skills Workshops February 2008 Lake District Courses aimed at student mountaineering clubs (open applications also welcome). Ratio of 1 instructor to 8 participants, duration 1 day - Saturday or Sunday with an evening lecture on Saturday for all participants. These workshops give guidance on topics such as navigation, ropework, use of equipment, and avalanche assessment. Applications to the BMC early January (check application form for deadline date). Application forms are available from the BMC office in November.
