2008 Alfred Stepheson Award Winner Announced!
The 2008 Award has been given to Sarah Mayer, an outstanding Expedition Leader whose dedication and commitment to youth expeditions deserves recognition. The Stephenson Award is given annually to an individual who is a member of the Young Explorers’ Trust or an affiliated expedition group for outstanding service to youth expeditioning. There are many ways by which such service may occur. It might be for a long period of involvement with the youth expedition scene, for a young member who has later developed active leadership skills or a young member who has made a particular contribution to an expedition in the field. Old, young and anybody in between can be nominated. It is named after Alfred Stephenson. Steve was the first Chairman of the YET Screening Panel from when it was established in 1974 for over the next decade. During this period the YET Screening system (now called Evaluations) established its reputation. Steve had a long and successful commitment to expeditioning and was a member of the British Graham Land Expedition which over-wintered from 1934 -1937 during the course of surveying a large area of the Antarctic Peninsula. He was Secretary of the Antarctic Club for over 40 years and this Award was first set up to mark his retirement from that post in 1999. The 2008 Award has been given to Sarah Mayer. Sarah has been involved in facilitating youth expeditions since her early 20’s when as a leader on a British Schools Exploring Society (BSES) expedition to Greenland, Sarah became a huge inspiration to the young explorers with her accomplished outdoor skills and knowledge and passion about Greenland and the Polar Regions. As well as her own expeditions, Sarah went on to work as the Expeditions Officer at BSES, took a place on the YET Council for a number of years and last year was Chief Leader of a BSES expedition to Greenland. In this, she was once again an inspiration to her young explorers. As a young woman in what is still largely a male dominated arena, her long-term commitment to youth expeditions deserves this recognition.

Team members needed for North Pole Trip

Young Team members needed to join North Pole Trip
Katie Walter is walking to the North Pole in April 2009 to raise money for two charities. Katie is 15 and she will walk 60 miles (the 'Last Degree') across the most hostile terrain on the planet. She needs two young people to accompany her. The expedition will be cold, hard and tough but with once in a lifetime rewards that can’t be bought and will never be forgotten. Too often is the term; ‘once in a lifetime’ used. This time it can be applied. The young people will also become role models for young people all over the country; proof that today’s generation have ‘the right stuff.’ The young people will be given comprehensive training and be guided by an experienced leader team to ensure success. Each person will have to raise £20,500. This cost covers all training, all clothing and equipment, all flights and accommodation, insurance and mentoring costs to raise the money. If you are interested, please contact Steve Bull at Bull Precision Expeditions Ltd on 07813 812030 or stevebull@bullexpeditions.com
CRB Disclosures and YET

CRB Disclosures and YET
CRB Disclosures and YET - with effect from 1st March 2008. The number of “umbrella” bodies that can offer the service of CRB Disclosure is being greatly reduced and YET was one of those organisations so affected in the latest round of changes. Therefore it is with regret that YET announces that under the revised regulations it is no longer possible for YET to offer this service. For organisations previously using YET to obtain its CRB Disclosures for volunteers or employees we recommend that you examine the possibility of using one of the main umbrella organisations that can still provide this service. Details, together with administration costs in addition to the required fee, can be found at:www.disclosures.co.uk (The parent organisation is the registered CRB umbrella body Atlantic Data). www.capitaresourcing.co.uk (The Capita Recruitment Vetting Service is one of the original and largest umbrella organisations).www.tmgcrb.co.uk (TMG CRB is the umbrella body recommended by CCPR for all member organisations). YET will continue through its “News” to keep member organisations informed of developments in relation to CRB Disclosures and of the Independent Safeguarding Authority Scheme (ISA).
