Young Explorers' Trust

The Everest Awards

The 2013 Everest Awards go to Olivia Woodhouse, Keiran Findlay and William White. Olivia is a student at Silverdale School in Sheffield. She is a member of their expedition to Madagascar where they will be studying the wildlife of this unique country and undertaking a community project. Kieran, Wey Valley School, is a member of a Dorset Expeditionary Society Expedition who aim to trek along the Annapurna Trail in Nepal staying with villagers whilst undertaking a water project and helping in a local school. William is organising a peer group expedition to cross Iceland self-planned and self-supported from the southern tip to the most northern point. The group of three have a charitable aim embracing the spirit of adventure.

The David Hollier Awards

The 2013 award goes jointly to Scott Tomlinson and Reece Dugdale of South Ribble Scouts who will be spending three weeks in Uganda building a well in the poverty stricken village of Bulera and then helping in the local school.

The Jim Bishop Awards

Awarded to two students in 2013 – Rosanna Page, of Holmewood School, will be trekking and camping in southern Tanzania whilst being involved in community projects in the local villages and Jack Bucknell will be undertaking two fieldwork projects, documenting cave art and elephant conservation in the Namib Desert in Namibia with the British Exploring Society.

The John Hunt Awards

Timothy Adelani from St Olaves School will be a member of a twin phase expedition to South Africa and Mozambique. In the former he will be working to collect data on flora & fauna in the Kruger National Park. In Mozambique he will be diving to record the life on the coral reefs.

Michael Walker from Exeter School will be helping a community project building an aeosphere greenhouse before trekking in the Nubra Valley in Zanskar, India and attempting a 6000m peak.

Sir Vivian Fuchs Awards

Awarded to five students in 2013. Edward Lavender from Windermere is joining a BES Expedition to Finnmark in Arctic Norway undertaking scientific research in ecological and glacial in a demanding environment.

Ben Lawrence, a student at Budmouth School, is a member of the Dorset Expeditionary Society on a five week expedition to the Ecuadorean Andes and Amazon Basin, climbing, canoeing, trekking and mountain biking.

Angus Michie from Yarm School is also a member of a BES Expedition. He is taking part in a three week “canyon to coast” expedition in NW Namibia surveying cave art and working on an elephant conservation project.

Richard Spindley of the Norfolk & Suffolk ATC. He is part of the “Sea to Sky” Adventure Training programme of the ATC in British Columbia where he will undertake a 3-week expedition to study the effect of human activity on the natural environment. Hiking, rafting, mountain biking and glacier travel will all feature as well as conservation work with the National Park.

Katie Houston, a student at Fortrose Academy, will be exploring a valley to the NE of Ammassalik in Greenland carrying out scientific and glacial fieldwork.

Alec Christie: Alec (18), who attends the Queen Elizabeth School in Kirkby Lonsdale, is a member of a 15-day expedition to Madagascar to undertake dolphin and coral reef monitoring and exploration.
